BIM – Lutz Robbers in conversation with Dennis R. Shelden.

In the past years, the acronym BIM has become a metaphor for the emergence of digital tools in practices of architectural design, planning and construction. Building Information Modelling allows not only for the optimization of processes through the improved exchange of information. The fundamental novelty resides primarily in transforming the formerly linear process chains, controlled by architects, from the initial draft to building construction into integrated, networked, and open processes. The ensuing renegotiation of agency between human and non-human actors leads to new lines of conflict. The dispute about the ways of designing, planning and building shifts to the level of digital codes and protocols.
